WORLD FAMOUS COMPOSER AND PERFORMERS COMBINE EAST AND WEST FOR CAL STATE SAN BERNARDINO SHOWCASE CONCERT

World famous composer Chinary Ung and his students will come together with top performers to display their integration of Eastern and Western music in A Confluence of Cultures

San Bernardino, Calif. 05/13/09 -- As part of the CSUSB Music Department's Music Showcase series, A Confluence of Cultures: Music of the Pacific Rim, will integrate Eastern tradition with Western culture through the music of world famous composer Chinary Ung and his past students.  On Saturday, May 30, Ung and his past students will be at CSUSB to have their music performed by some of the world’s top musicians. The performance will take place in the CSUSB Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are: $10 for students/ $12 for senior, staff or faculty/ $16 for general admission.

Composer Chinary Ung was the first American composer to win the highly coveted and international Grawemeyer Award (1989), sometimes called the Nobel prize for music composition. His SPIRAL XII: "Space Between Heaven and Earth" was recently premiered by The Los Angeles Master Chorale at Walt Disney Concert Hall. The issues of the confluence of various musical cultures are complex and can be interpreted in a variety of ways depending on one's own cultural background and his or her exposure to other world cultures.    The music of Chinary Ung, and his past students Koji Nakano, Bruce Crossman, Sean Heim and Chi-Chen Wei incorporates many aspects of multi-culturalism and most specifically addresses the integration of Western and Non-Western aesthetics to achieve a kind of confluence between Eastern and Western cultures.   Please join us for an evening of innovation and tradition featuring the works of these fine composers performed by some of the top musicians in the world of contemporary music.
