CSUSB MUSIC TO HOST COMPOSER CAROLYN BREMER AS ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 8
The American composer Carolyn Bremer will be an artist-in-residence at CSUSB next Friday, February 8, 2008, as the CSUSB Symphonic Band & Chamber Winds perform two of her pieces, featuring a performance of Early Light and the West Coast premiere of her new work Malibu Danbury.
Carolyn Bremer has risen to national and international prominence as a composer “driven by hobgoblins of modernist cant.” Her most often performed works are for wind ensemble and for chamber groups with computer-projected text. Her works have been performed in Carnegie Hall, Germany, Norway, Sweden, and throughout the U.S. She has been commissioned and her music recorded extensively. She has been the recipient of grants from Meet The Composer and the American Music Center. She has been on the faculty of CSU-Long Beach since 2001.
As part of her residency at CSUSB, Dr. Bremer will meet with student composers to discuss the art and craft of musical composition (and look at student works); she will collaborate in rehearsals of her music with the CSUSB Symphonic Band & Chamber Winds, under the direction of Jeffrey Boeckman; and finally she will attend the CSUSB Bands concert on Friday evening, 2/8/08 at 7:30pm, to introduce her works to the audience.
Early Light, a paean to baseball, was composed in 1995 for the Oklahoma City Philharmonic and later rescored for wind band. The work has become immensely popular, receiving numerous performances and recordings. Her new chamber piece Malibu Danbury is scored for chamber ensemble and computer-projected slide show; the work is a driving conflation of influences, ranging from the surf music of Dick Dale to the music of Charles Ives.
All of these events are open to the public, and the University community is encouraged to attend the composition master class, the open rehearsals, and of course the evening concert.

1:30p Rehearsal on Early Light – PA Recital Hall
4p Rehearsal on Malibu Danbury – PA Recital Hall
7:30p CSUSB Bands in concert – PA Recital Hall
Jeffrey Boeckman and the Department of Music are deeply grateful for the support of the Intellectual Life and Visiting Scholars Committee for their financial assistance in making this residency possible.
Composer’s Biography:
Carolyn Bremer has been dubbed a composer "driven by hobgoblins of post modernist cant." Bremer came to composition on the heels of intensive training as an orchestral bassist. Her catalogue contains works based on feminist symbolism (Athene), baseball (Early Light), and postmodern theory (Adventures in Hyperreality).
In recent years, Bremer has had performances of her works at Carnegie Hall; in Germany, Norway, and Sweden; and for the gala 150th anniversary concert at WestPoint. Her consortium-commissions include Symphony for Wind Band, premiered by Ray Cramer at Indiana University and Returns of the Day, premiered by Thomas Dvorak at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. CDs released since Spring 2002 include the El Paso Wind Symphony on Summit Records, the Heritage of American Band of the US Air Force, the Towson University Symphonic Band, and the Monarch Brass Ensemble. Bremer was guest composer for the California All-State Honor Band, Technology Initiative Conference at Collin County College in Dallas, Texas; the Women Band Directors International Conference in San Diego; and composer-in-residence at Mansfield University.
Bremer has received grants from Meet The Composer, the American Music Center, the Kirkpatrick Foundation, and the FIPSE program at the US Department of Education, and a Dissertation Fellowship from the Regents of the University of California. Bremer studied at the Eastman School of Music, CalArts, and received the Ph.D. in composition from UCSB. She was Chair of Composition at the University of Oklahoma from 1991-2000 where she held the Sandra and Brian O'Brien Presidential Professorship. Currently, she is Associate Professor of Composition and Theory at California State University Long Beach.
Artist’s statement:
“I am exploring the intersections of many fields -- of music and photography; creativity and meaning; of postmodern thought; of hybrid forms (music composition/photograph); of language as adjudicator of creative activity; of technology as the driver or slave for change. At the crux is this question: how do I meld the various influences and ideas I have into a new piece?”
